Your pet is one of your best friends, so you want him or her to be as healthy and comfortable as possible. All across the country, medical marijuana and CBD-based products are becoming more commonplace not only for humans, but for pets. Here’s what you need to know about using CBD for your pet.
1. CBD Does Not Contain THC
Many people assume CBD gets the user high, but THC is the psychoactive component in cannabis and is not found in CBD. While marijuana as a whole negatively impacts a pet’s health, CBD does not cause negative side effects in most pets.
2. CBD Is Available in Different Forms
CBD products for pets are available in oil form or as a soft chew. Soft chews are convenient, but don’t deliver as much of the active ingredients as an oil does. When you use an eyedropper to put oil under your pet’s tongue, it will receive nearly twice as many active ingredients.
3. Talking To Your Vet About CBD Is Necessary
Most commonly, CBD is used to ease symptoms of anxiety in your pets. However, many pet owners claim they also see signs of eased pain, fewer seizures, or even clearer skin. Keep in mind, though, that these are not medically proven claims.
4. CBD Doses Are Different for Each Pet
Just like humans, every pet reacts differently to CBD. Dosage depends on how large your pet is, and more. Never give CBD to your pet before reading the dosage instructions thoroughly. If you administer oil, use an eyedropper with clearly marked measurements to avoid overdosing.
5. Choosing the Right Product Is Important
Not all CBD products for pets are created equal. Don’t be tempted by low prices or fancy packaging. Choose a product that has been tested and certified. Seek recommendations from your vet if necessary, and remember that lower-quality products often have additives and fillers.
